Video guide to Cebu City including Magellan’s Cross (5.10 minute mark of video).
Located right next door to Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño in a small Pavilion, is Magellan’s Cross. Supposedly Magellan planted the cross close to the area where it now stands. It is an important part of Philippines history as it marked the first Catholic Mass in Cebu and changed the direction of the country for ever. Today, around 90% of the population are Christians. Natives believed the cross had some miraculous powers and they would strip pieces of the wood from it. These days the cross is a replica of the original one Magellan placed here,it is believed it still contains some of the splinters of the original cross that the natives didn’t already take. The ceiling of the pavilion has a mural showing Magellan planting the cross. If you want a blessing there are ladies with brightly coloured candles who will chant a blessing and place your candle below the cross.
